YOUR COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
Here are just a few examples of where your United Way donation is going, and the impact you are making on our community. Last year:
- 2-1-1 Information & Referral Hotline – If an individual finds they need information on a health and human service related issue, all they have to do is dial 2-1-1 and they will be provided with contact information that will connect them with the appropriate resources in their community. Over the year, the 2-1-1 Helpline fielded 777 calls from Allegany County residents.
- Allegany Senior Foundation – Providing Lifeline Unites (Personal Emergency Response Systems) in the homes of people who live alone or are alone for long periods of time ensuring that emergency help is only the press of a button away. United Way funding equips 55 seniors with Lifeline Unites.
- Family Service Society, Inc. – Whitesville Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. This program provides life-changing mentoring to children enabling them to get more out of their education, participate in additional extracurricular enrichment activities, and achieve a successful middle school transition and an on-time high school graduation. This year 24 mentor-student pairs worked together on a weekly basis.
- Southern Tier Traveling Teachers – In-home instruction in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED Preparation is provided by this program to disadvantaged out of school youth and adults aged 16 and above living in Allegany County. This year, 45 students participated in this program with 22 passing the GED exam.
