The holiday stockings are still on the walls at Hart’s Jewelry, and on Friday afternoon, the Main Street business made a big gift to the Allegany County United Way.

Hart’s Jewelry raised $500 over the holiday season by selling 50 pairs of pearl earrings at $10 apiece. The full proceeds were donated to the United Way on Friday, with Allegany County United Way Executive Director Susan Bull accepting the gift along with Executive Assistant Mandi Joyce Phelps.

“Sometimes we give an award of $500 to an organization, so you essentially just funded an entire ask for the new year,” Bull said. “Thank you very much.”

This is not the first time Hart’s Jewelry has impacted a community organization. Last year’s holiday drive raised funds for Catholic Charities.

“This time we wanted to go with the United Way because they touch so many lives and help so many different groups,” said Hart’s Jewelry owner Bill Hart. “It’s a good group to support. They do a lot of great things for the community and they’re very active. The United Way does real good job in our county, and it’s important to support them. Due to changes in the tax code, it’s going to be more challenging for not-for-profits.”

The Allegany County United Way recently moved into a new home at 103 North Main Street, between L’Italia and Brand Name Appliance. Learn more about the organization at www.acuw.com. Hart’s Jewelry just capped off its 30th year in business in 2018. Learn more at www.hartsjewelry.com
