Funded Programs

Each year, community volunteers on the Allegany County United Way’s Impact Councils study the documented needs in our county.  Based on these needs, funds are allocated to programs which serve the most pressing needs in four focus areas: education, income stability, health, and critical needs. 

Income Focus

Providing people of all ages with opportunities that result in economic self-sufficiency.

High School Equivalency Preparation

After School Program

Provides quality after-school care, academic enrichment activities, and nutritious snacks for at-risk low-income youth.

Whitesville Big Brother/Big Sister Program

Scio Big Brother/Big Sister Program

(Family Service Society)

Effective peer mentoring for at-risk children in Genesee Valley, Whitesville and Scio Schools for improved social skills and academic performance.

Summer Reading Program

(Cuba Library)

A Summer Learning Program that encourages children and families to read throughout the summer in order to combat summer slide (the loss of literacy over the summer months). We offer both educational and entertaining programs to encourage participation. Children can earn free books and prizes as incentive for participating in the Summer Learning Program.

Health Focus

Providing people of all ages with opportunities that result in economic self-sufficiency.

 Allegany County Association for the Blind Provide low income individuals who are visually impaired with medical care, and aids and appliances.

Youth Compeer

(Mental Health Association)

A mentoring program for children and youth who are experiencing emotional problems, behavioral issues or youth at risk from being placed from the home.  Through our recreational activities and 1:1 mentor matches.

Personal Emergency Response System

(Office for the Aging)

(PERS) are devices that monitor the safety and status of elderly individuals in their homes, and alert emergency responders and family members should a crisis occur.  These devices enable individuals who would otherwise require care or supervision to remain safely in their homes alone.

Meal on Wheels

(Office for the Aging)

Offers a freshly cooked nutritious meal five days a week to Allegany County residents over age 60 (or caregivers under the age of 60 caring for an individual over 60)

Summer Rec Program

(Fillmore Powerhouse)

Provide and promote healthy Eating and physical activity opportunities for youth during summer months. Increase the knowledge of health food, exercise options, and health programs.

Summer Camp

(Royal Family Kids Camp)

Annual summer camp experience providing positive memories for at-risk children, ages 6 – 12, referred by Allegany County DSS.

Critical Needs Focus

Helping to meet short-term but critical needs such as food, shelter, disaster relief, and critical illness.
