Fillmore Power House
Powerhouse leads to success
PJ* is a quiet and smiling 6th grade student who comes to the Fillmore Powerhouse After-School Program with an eagerness to get started on his homework. He enjoys various activities at the Powerhouse including dodge ball, kickball, wiffle ball, drawing, and pool. Outside of school and the Powerhouse PJ enjoys hard work and being outdoors. He takes pride in doing odd jobs for neighbors. He has a very strong work ethic and is always ready and willing to help out. PJ also assists his mom and dad with their local hardware business. The Powerhouse After-School Program has become part of PJ’s routine. He is committed to his studies and disciplined about getting right to work once tutoring begins. PJ is a good role model for younger students in completing work and is patient when tutors are busy helping others. PJ is succeeding academically as a straight-A student!
However, PJ didn’t always experience the same academic success that he enjoys now. When PJ first came to the Powerhouse last year he was struggling with his school work. His mother was very concerned about his lack of success in school and his sporadic homework completion. PJ began to attend the Powerhouse After-School Program where he received daily, consistent help from our faithful tutors. At first he was a bit resistant to ask for help, but as he got to know the tutors he came out of his shell. PJ put in the work and began to see his grades improve significantly. Today, he is on the 6th Grade Principal’s Honor Roll!d work and being outdoors. He takes pride in doing odd jobs for neighbors. He has a very strong work ethic and is always ready and willing to help out. PJ also assists his mom and dad with their local hardware business. Supported through Allegany County United Way funding, 45 children and youth participated in the Powerhouse Tutoring Program this year. Powerhouse staff worked with students, parents, and Fillmore Central teachers and administration to best meet the academic needs of the students. Powerhouse tutors provide one-on-one help with homework. Volunteers from the community provide the Powerhouse with over 30 hours per week helping with supervision, food preparation, and tutoring (4 tutors are NYS certified teachers).
