Imagine not knowing where you and your children are going to sleep tonight. What would you do?

Wellsville’s Salvation Army’s Emergency Shelter and Clothing program provides emergency assistance for individuals or families who find themselves without shelter.

This past winter brought record-breaking low temperatures. On one particularly bitter night, the Salvation Army received a telephone call from the Police Department who needed assistance helping an elderly Allegany County woman. She had made her way to the local hospital where she informed the staff that she needed a warm place to stay because the weather was so severe that frost had begun to form on her bed sheets – even though she had plastic covering her windows. The hospital staff then contacted the police department to see if they could provide any guidance on how to assist this elderly woman. Thanks to a United Way grant in support of the Salvation Army’s Emergency Shelter Program, the Salvation Army was able to provide emergency hotel accommodations for this individual until the weather warmed up enough so she could return to her home.

Many families and individuals who find themselves in a homeless situation also need clothing and other personal items. Through partnering with the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Scio, NY, the Emergency Shelter and Clothing program is able to assist in this area as well.
